Shot Peening is an established technology which is
ideally designed to enhance the fatigue strength of
components subject to high alternating stress.
The micro cracks that exist on the surface of metal
can bring about the fatigue failure. These failures
originate in the surface areas under tension load
and cracks start propagating.
Shot Peening is the most effective way of reducing
these fatigue failures. In the shot peening process,
micro particles of the metal or glass are applied at
high velocity over the surface of the metal. These
small particles generate compressive stress pattern
over the surface of metal. With the compressive
strength generated, microscopic defects are
eliminated and the surface toughens. Increase in the
fatigue life upto about 800% is generally observed
after peening.
Peening is used on trubine blades, axles, drive
shafts, gear teeth, torsion, ball stud, high
strength fasteners, leaf and coils springs, landing
gears in the aero space industries etc. It is also
being used for strengthening the aircraft skins. |
